Mumbai's monorail system faced a minor scare during advanced CBTC signaling trials at the Wadala depot on Wednesday morning. A monorail coach tilted slightly during routine tests, but there were no passengers on board and officials quickly brought the situation under control.
Officials with MMMOCL described the tilt as minor and said it occurred in a fully protected environment with strict safety protocols. Two technical staff, including the operator, were on board at the time; no injuries were reported.
The trials are part of a technology upgradation program to validate the new CBTC signaling technology being implemented by Medha SMH Rail Pvt. Ltd. The work is expected to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability before broader deployment.
Officials stressed that such tests simulate extreme or worst-case scenarios to ensure preparedness. Some trials are conducted on holidays to minimise commuter disruption as the project progresses.
Citizens are asked not to panic; the trials are internal and controlled, and regular operations remain unaffected as upgrades continue.
