The mighty US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln has departed Thailand after a five-day port visit, bringing an end to a brief period of relaxation for its crew following an extensive deployment. The nuclear-powered carrier, along with its roughly 5,000 personnel, had been on an exceptionally long mission, including operations in the Middle East, marking a modern-day record for consecutive days at sea.
Commanding Officer Captain Dan Keeler expressed gratitude to the Thai people for their hospitality during the visit.
Naval deployments typically span six to nine months, but the Abraham Lincoln's mission was significantly extended due to its involvement in a naval blockade and combat operations during the war with Iran.
The carrier arrived in Thailand last Wednesday, docking near the resort city of Pattaya, approximately 150km southeast of Bangkok.
Thailand holds significance as the United States' only treaty partner in mainland Southeast Asia.
The visit saw thousands of sailors and Marines disembarking, eager to enjoy some downtime in civilian clothes after months at sea.
