The city of Delhi is reeling from the shocking details emerging in the murder case of a Delhi University assistant professor. What initially appeared to be a mysterious death has unfolded into a horrifying tale of family betrayal driven by a property dispute, culminating in the arrest of two distant relatives who traveled over 1,400 kilometers from Kolkata to commit the crime.
Dr. Debosmita Paul, a 45-year-old assistant professor at Shivaji College, was found brutally murdered in her apartment in Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi, on June 4. Her body bore severe head and face injuries, and her wrists were slit, indicating a violent attack. Police investigation was launched immediately after her sister discovered the grim scene following unanswered calls.
The breakthrough came with the arrest of a couple from Kolkata, identified as distant relatives of the deceased professor. Police revealed that the motive behind the heinous crime was a long-standing property dispute concerning an ancestral house located in Burdwan, West Bengal. This property had been allotted to Dr. Paul through a family settlement.
According to police, the arrested couple had been living as tenants in the ancestral property since 2023. Dr. Paul had repeatedly asked them to vacate the premises, leading to escalating tensions. While her parents and two siblings were reportedly willing to sell the property, Dr. Paul was steadfastly against it, effectively becoming an obstacle to the couple's desire to acquire the house.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Ajit Kumar Singla explained the chilling plan: "The professor, however, was against the family decision of selling their ancestral property. She was also against selling their Kolkata house to the tenant couple. The couple found her the main hurdle. The two were enraged because despite their repeated requests, the professor was not giving her consent for selling the house. And because of that reason they travelled to Delhi, killed her on Wednesday, and returned to Kolkata." The couple meticulously planned their journey, executed the murder, and attempted to evade scrutiny by immediately returning to Kolkata.
The intricate details of the journey and the motive have stunned many, highlighting the extreme lengths to which individuals can go over financial and property disagreements. The Delhi Police's swift action in solving this complex case has brought some closure to the initial mystery, though the tragedy of Dr. Paul's loss remains.
