Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Cats, quashing Chelsea's hopes of signing the influential midfielder this summer. The news comes after Sunderland swiftly rejected an £8 million bid from the London club, making it clear that their skipper is not for sale.
Chelsea, under manager Xabi Alonso, had been keen to reunite with Xhaka, who played under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Sources close to Chelsea suggested that Xhaka was also interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, where his contract at Sunderland runs until 2028. However, Sunderland's firm stance and subsequent discussions with the 33-year-old seem to have cemented his future at the Stadium of Light.
Xhaka’s decision is a significant boost for Sunderland, especially after his stellar performance last season. He played a pivotal role in helping the club achieve a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, securing qualification for the Conference League – their first European campaign in 53 years. His arrival from Bayer Leverkusen was instrumental in this success.
