Israel Frees 5 Lebanese in Exchange for Search for Missing Jews

In a significant diplomatic development, Israel has released five Lebanese civilians who were detained, handing them over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This exchange is part of a deal wherein Lebanon has agreed to assist in the search for the bodies of Jewish Lebanese citizens who went missing during the country's decades-long civil war. The release unfolded over two days.

On Thursday, Malek Ghazi was the first Lebanese prisoner freed.

By Friday, four more were released. Among them was Hussein Ayash, whose brother Mahmoud Ayash expressed his profound relief and hope for the liberation of all Lebanese citizens held in Israeli prisons.

Associated Press journalists observed a convoy of ICRC vehicles heading towards the Naqoura border crossing in southern Lebanon, where the transfers took place. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the agreement, stating that Israel consented to release five Lebanese civilians in exchange for Lebanon's assistance in locating the remains of "abducted" Jewish leaders from the civil war era.

The ICRC played a crucial role in facilitating this exchange, taking custody of the released individuals. However, the organization also used the opportunity to highlight a broader concern, noting that its teams have not had access to detainees held in Israel since October 2023.

The ICRC statement emphasized that
