The Philippines has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with Beijing following the release of an AI-generated video by Chinese state media that depicted Filipinos as monkeys. The controversial video, posted by China Daily, showed a monkey dressed in traditional Filipino attire, seemingly mocking the nation's stance on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The highly offensive video is not an isolated incident. China Daily has recently posted a series of clips and cartoons on Facebook, consistently ridiculing the Philippines' actions in the contested waters. These portrayals have included depictions of Manila as a clown and a snake, escalating an already tense diplomatic atmosphere. The caption accompanying the monkey clip reiterated Beijing's long-held position, stating, "Ten years on, the so-called South China Sea arbitration award remains no remedy for peace, but a source of confrontation dressed up as law." It further accused the Philippines of "clinging to external forces and stirring up trouble," thus "turning their country into a pawn in someone else's geopolitical game."
This incident adds to a series of provocations in the region. Just last June, Beijing installed a floating barrier at the entrance to the Scarborough Shoal, which was only removed after formal diplomatic protests from the Philippines. In the same month, Manila's defense secretary, Teodoro, and his immediate family were barred from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Despite the Philippines' strong condemnation of the AI video, Chinese authorities have yet to issue a response to Manila's rebuke, leaving the diplomatic fallout uncertain.
