Tragedy in Germany: Six Killed in Shelter Shooting Over Custody Dispute

A devastating incident has rocked the northern German town of Stade, where six people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a shelter for mothers and children. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Monday afternoon, around 12:15 PM, in the town located approximately 50km west of Hamburg. Five adults tragically died at the scene, and a sixth person later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Police swiftly detained three individuals, including the suspected shooter, a 45-year-old German man of Turkish descent. Authorities revealed that the horrific shooting stemmed from a “custody dispute” between the man and the mother of his three-month-old daughter, who resided at the facility. Fortunately, both the mother and her child were not among the six fatalities in the attack.

Lower Saxony's interior minister, Daniela Behrens, described the incident as an “extremely cold-blooded act of violence.” However, officials have stated that there is no indication the attack was politically motivated or an act of extremism. Initial reports from local media indicated four women and one man among the deceased, though formal details of their identities have not yet been released.

Footage released by Bild newspaper captured police surrounding and detaining two people from a car with a flat tire, believed to be connected to the incident. Police had cordoned off the area near the facility, located on a cobbled street, but later assured the public that there was no further danger. Forensic teams are continuing their investigation into this profound tragedy.
