Google Bets Big on Anthropic With Up to $40B Investment
Alphabet's Google plans a major stake in AI startup Anthropic, starting with $10B and up to $30B more tied to targets, expanding cloud computing capacity.
Alphabet-owned Google is poised to invest up to $40 billion in AI startup Anthropic, kicking off with a $10 billion cash infusion and a potential $30 billion more if performance targets are met. The investment values Anthropic at about $350 billion, aligning with its February funding round, and signals a deepening partnership as Anthropic seeks to scale demand for Claude and Claude Code across business and developer use cases.
Google Cloud will play a central role in the partnership, with the company committing 5 gigawatts of computing capacity to Anthropic over the next five years, with the possibility of additional capacity later. The deal is designed to help Anthropic scale its infrastructure to support rising demand for its AI tools while enabling Google to broaden its AI offerings and cloud services around the world.
The arrangement builds on a longstanding collaboration between Google and Anthropic, alongside earlier ties with Broadcom, and comes as the AI race intensifies across big tech players. Anthropic has already drawn significant funding from other large backers, including a $5 billion round from Amazon at a similar valuation, with potential for further amounts over time. Google has been leveraging its tensor processing units (TPUs) and cloud infrastructure to support high-performance AI workloads, and the deal could accelerate the deployment of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos and Claude Code to a wider base of customers.
Industry watchers note that the scale of the investment underscores how cloud compute capacity is a pivotal battleground for AI leadership. Anthropic has hinted at an initial public offering as early as October, a move that would further alter the competitive landscape as this collaboration deepens. If realized, the combination of enhanced compute and a broader product slate could help Anthropic secure a prominent position in the AI tools market while expanding Google’s influence in enterprise AI deployments.
