Turnstile Rocks SNL Debut: Hardcore Returns After 45 Years!
Baltimore's own Turnstile makes history with a thunderous Saturday Night Live debut, performing Grammy-winning hits. Don't miss their iconic return to TV!
History was made on Saturday Night Live this past weekend as Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile delivered an electrifying debut performance, ending a remarkable 45-year drought for the genre on the iconic sketch show. The band, fresh off their appearance at Austin City Limits, showcased their Grammy-winning talent to a national audience.
Hosted by Dakota Johnson, the second episode of SNL's 52nd season saw Brendan Yates and co. tear through a powerful set. Their first performance featured 'Birds', one of the heavier tracks from their critically acclaimed fourth album, 'Never Enough'.
Later in the evening, Turnstile returned to the stage for a compelling two-song medley.
They opened with the more dream-like 'I Care' before transitioning seamlessly into the hard-hitting 'Dull', captivating viewers with their dynamic range.
This landmark appearance caps a massive period for Turnstile. Their album 'Never Enough', released last June, garnered widespread praise, including a glowing five-star review from NME for its "heartfelt hardcore poptimism." The album's success was further cemented when 'Birds' won Best Metal Performance and 'Never Enough' took home Best Rock Album at the Grammys earlier this year.
Following their Grammy wins, the band members used their platform to speak out against "heightened state violence" globally, emphasizing the importance of artists reflecting the world around them. In August, they released 'Never Enough: Versions', a complete reimagining of the album featuring an impressive roster of collaborators including Elton John and Hayley Williams.
Turnstile's SNL debut sets a high bar for future musical guests, with Rosalía scheduled to perform next week.
