Vizag Mayor alleges attack at GVMC Council, blames Botcha

Visakhapatnam's GVMC Council meeting turned chaotic as Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao alleged he was assaulted, pointing the finger at YSRCP leader Botcha Satyanarayana. The mayor suggested a personal grudge had taken shape since Satyanarayana’s wife lost to M. Sribharat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He added that the confrontation unfolded in the council chamber and that the incident was precipitated by political animosity.

Clarifying the land issue, the mayor said that regularisation of government land falls under the State government’s purview and that the matter was placed before the Council for information before being forwarded to the government for action. He emphasised that the land in question lies within GVMC limits and that the process is a state matter, not a municipal one. He also accused Satyanarayana of creating a drama and noted that Satyanarayana, along with Varudu Kalyani and Kumbha Ravibabu, attended the meeting despite not being listed as invitees, suggesting an intent to disrupt proceedings.

Opposition voices joined the chorus of concern. TDP MLAs Palla Srinivasa Rao, P.G.V.R. Naidu (Gana Babu), and Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu condemned the alleged attack, saying YSRCP leaders arrived with the aim of disturbing the council session and bringing “faction culture” to Vizag. They argued that if there were objections to any proposal, those concerns should have been raised when the agenda was before the Council.

The controversy over land drew further attention with references to a proposed bid involving ₹5,000 crore of government land in favor of a private university. The mayor noted that the issue is a matter of governance and urged a clear, lawful path forward. The council has since forwarded the matter to the state government for appropriate action, signaling the start of a contentious dispute playing out in Vizag’s political arena.
