The Iranian national football team, affectionately known as Team Melli, has secured an important victory off the pitch ahead of their crucial World Cup match against Egypt. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a significant policy change, allowing the team to travel to Seattle 48 hours before their game on June 26th.
This decision comes after widespread complaints from the Iranian squad regarding stringent travel restrictions. Previously, the team was only permitted to enter the United States 24 hours before their matches and was required to leave immediately after, creating what their head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, described as an “oppressive” situation. Captain Mehdi Taremi had even labeled the logistical hurdles a “disaster,” highlighting the disadvantage this put them at, particularly concerning post-match recovery.
Team Melli had been training in Mexico and faced these tight schedules for their first two fixtures. The travel constraints prompted them to consider lodging an official complaint with Fifa about the “restrictions imposed by the organizers” of the World Cup.
“Ahead of the match in Seattle on 26 June, the Iranian team will be allowed to come in match day minus two, so two days before the match,” a DHS spokesperson informed NBC. They clarified that the team would still be asked to depart on the evening the match wraps up. This adjustment aims to ensure fairness and allow the team adequate preparation, with the spokesperson noting, “the president wants to make sure that we’re talking about what actually happens on the pitch.”
This new arrangement provides Iran with much-needed time to rest, train, and acclimatize before their do-or-die encounter. A win against Egypt on Friday will see them qualify for the next round of the tournament, making every preparation advantage critical.
