ICE detains Bruna Ferreira, mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, as detentions in immigration crackdown draw attention to a family custody case.
A woman linked to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as she was leaving her home to pick up her son from school. Bruna Ferreira, described by government authorities as a “criminal illegal alien from Brazil,” is a Boston-area resident and the mother of Leavitt’s nephew. Ferreira is 33 years old and has a son who is 11. The two had been in a relationship previously, and they share joint custody of the boy, who has lived with his father in New Hampshire since birth after the couple separated about a decade ago. The boy has not spoken with Ferreira since her detention, according to her family.
Ferreira’s sister said ICE agents demanded her sister’s name and driver’s license at Ferreira’s home. The sister did not have an identification card at the time. Ferreira’s lawyer has indicated that the family continues to work through the custody arrangement for the boy, who reportedly spends time with both parents under their joint arrangement. The case has drawn additional scrutiny because of Ferreira’s connections to a White House staff member, highlighting how immigration enforcement actions can intersect with political figures and their families.
The detainment is described in reports as part of a broader immigration enforcement effort carried out during the era of the prior administration’s crackdown on unauthorized entry.
