Global internet users faced a sharp disruption as Cloudflare reported a spike in unusual traffic to one of its services, triggering widespread 500 errors across thousands of sites. The outage hit household names like X, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Canva, Spotify, Uber, and Letterboxd, among others, leaving users unable to load feeds, post updates, or access services for hours.
Cloudflare said it is aware of the issue and is working with its teams to restore service, with investigations focusing on a software system crash. The company did not immediately reveal the exact cause, but noted that traffic to parts of its network was being affected and that the team was on 'all hands on deck' to resolve the problem.
Across the globe, users flocked to status pages and outage trackers, which logged tens of thousands of reports at peak. As services began to recover in some regions, businesses that rely on Cloudflare’s CDN faced temporary delays, while individuals faced missing posts, failed logins, and streaming hiccups.
Experts warn that the outage underscores how many online services ride on a few critical infrastructure providers and how outages can cascade across the internet. It also highlights the importance of redundancy and transparent incident communication from providers.
With systems gradually stabilizing, users can expect a full return to normal as Cloudflare completes its remediation, though observers will be watching for cloud-service reliability and future mitigation steps.
