Peace returns to Ludhiana Central Jail after a violent clash; 24 inmates booked as security tightens following injuries to officials.
Ludhiana Central Jail on Tajpur Road remained tense on Wednesday after a violent clash the previous evening left several inmates and security personnel injured. Officials said the disturbance began when two inmates returning to their barracks after punishment got into a fight; a provocative remark reportedly sparked further violence, prompting hundreds of inmates to throw stones and bricks and target jail staff.
Jail Superintendent Kulwant Singh Sidhu was struck on the head with a brick and is currently stable in hospital; five police officials were injured, and some inmates were hurt as well. Emergency teams and security forces moved in to quell the melee and restore order.
Police said 24 prisoners have been booked in connection with Tuesday's incident. ACP Sumit Sood said a case has been registered and investigators will review CCTV footage and interview witnesses. The Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has sought a detailed report from prison authorities.
The incident echoes a major clash in 2019 at the same jail, raising concerns about inmate security and the safety of prison staff. Authorities stressed that no tolerance would be shown to disruptions of law and order and promised strict action against the accused.
Security has been tightened around the jail as investigations continue.
