Indian Ships Cross Strait of Hormuz Amid Gunboat Fire
India-bound ships faced gunboat fire while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, as India's INS Dhruv monitors missile tests and reinforces maritime security.
From April 17-18, 2026, a group of India-bound ships attempted to push through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian gunboats firing at least one vessel in the vicinity. MarineTraffic data indicates eight Indian-flagged ships sought to cross the strait, with seven actively attempting passage before returning to the Persian Gulf. Among those involved was the Sanmar Herald, which was fired upon, and which later retreated along with the rest of the flotilla. The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) crude oil tanker Desh Garima, which had previously gone to the Persian Gulf for drydock repairs, also exited the strait during the activity, according to tracker data.
