AstraZeneca faces a second major blow as it halts a late-stage lung cancer drug trial, Volrustomig, just weeks after a heart disease drug failure. What does this mean for cancer research and the pharmaceutical giant?
Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has announced another significant setback, halting a late-stage trial for its lung cancer drug, Volrustomig. This decision comes barely a month after the company also stopped a trial for a new heart disease treatment, marking a challenging period for the FTSE 100 firm.
The company revealed that its Volrustomig drug, when combined with chemotherapy, was deemed unlikely to significantly improve survival rates for lung cancer patients compared to existing treatments. This conclusion followed a recommendation from an Independent Data Monitoring Committee, which reviewed data from the ongoing phase three trials.
This latest news compounds difficulties for AstraZeneca, which saw billions wiped off its stock market value in July after it halted the trial for its heart disease drug, Wainua. The consecutive setbacks highlight the inherent challenges and high risks involved in pharmaceutical research and development.
Susan Galbraith, an executive vice president at AstraZeneca, expressed disappointment regarding the decision. “While we are disappointed, we will learn from this trial and are determined to continue pioneering new medicines from our industry-leading pipeline in our quest to improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer,” she stated.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, accounting for nearly one in four fatalities. Despite the halt for lung cancer, AstraZeneca confirmed it would continue trials for Volrustomig in treating other forms of cancer, including cervical cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and mesothelioma.
Amidst these challenges, the Anglo-Swedish group, headquartered in Cambridge, also shared positive news on the oncology front. Its Enhertu treatment demonstrated a “statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in progression-free survival” for patients with non-small cell lung cancer. This promising development means Enhertu will now proceed to a phase three trial, offering a ray of hope for patients. Ms. Galbraith emphasized the importance of these results for an aggressive lung cancer that often affects younger patients and has historically had limited first-line targeted treatment options.
