Engineering and textile exporters have sought government intervention as export goods to West Asian countries are stranded because of the war. UAE is the second largest market for Indian engineering goods, next to the US, and along with Saudi Arabia serves as a gateway to the West Asia and North Africa region. With contracts in places like Qatar, exporters may delay shipments until the situation becomes clearer, signaling a wait-and-watch stance as the situation unfolds.
The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry notes that the UAE is one of the largest markets for Indian textile and apparel exporters in West Asia, and in 2024, UAE was the fourth largest market for India’s textile and apparel exports. A. Sakthivel, chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council, has written to the secretary of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking a waiver of demurrage charges on export cargo due to flight disruptions. He argues that export consignments are currently stranded at multiple airport cargo terminals across India and has urged authorities to consider waivers for charges on shipments that could not be lifted because of flight disruptions, airspace restrictions, or related operational constraints arising from ongoing international developments.
The government has held a multi-agency meeting with exporters to review disruptions and has assured it stands ready to facilitate trade, ensure smoother clearances, and provide procedural flexibility in cases of genuine disruption. The situation remains fluid as authorities monitor developments and work to minimize delays for exporters.
