Get ready, UK! Another heatwave is on its way, with health alerts upgraded to amber across large parts of the country. This will be the fourth heatwave for the UK this year, and temperatures are set to climb significantly once more.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued these amber alerts, warning that the rising temperatures could pose increased health risks, especially for those in vulnerable groups. While many have enjoyed a brief respite with cooler weather and some rain recently, the heat is expected to spike again, particularly in the south.
Parts of southern England are forecast to meet the official heatwave criteria as early as Wednesday, with temperatures potentially reaching a sweltering 32C or even 33C. Other regions could see similar conditions by Thursday. The amber alert covers the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London, effective from Tuesday morning until Thursday morning. A yellow alert remains for Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, and South West.
Emergency services are already preparing for the potential fallout, bracing for more wildfires. During the third heatwave in mid-July, firefighters were battling nearly two dozen significant blazes simultaneously across England and Wales. This concern is heightened by recent destructive wildfires seen across mainland Europe, which forced hundreds of thousands from their homes in France and Spain.
Adding to the long-term perspective, a Met Office meteorologist recently stated that the UK's heatwave thresholds might need to be adjusted. This comes as the warming climate continues to bring record-breaking temperatures, making these intense heat periods a more regular occurrence.
