The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday held a one-day special session on women’s empowerment, and the proceedings turned into a sharp exchange between the ruling BJP and the Opposition benches over the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party and the Congress of obstructing the political rights of women and diverting attention from the core objective by raising questions about religious reservation. The SP, in turn, accused the BJP of misleading people on the issue of women’s reservation.
After a thorough discussion during the session, a condemnation motion against the parties opposing the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill was passed by voice vote. The political tussle highlighted deep-seated tensions over how women’s empowerment should be framed in policy and politics in Uttar Pradesh.
In a visible show of protest, a group of BJP women MLAs gathered in front of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s statue inside the Assembly premises, holding banners inscribed with the slogan "Insult to Matrushakti (women's power), India will not tolerate it." The scene underscored the personal and partisan stakes threaded through the debate on women’s representation and rights in the state.
