Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha officially flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the 57-day Amarnath Yatra 2026 from Jammu on Thursday, July 2, 2026. More than 4,800 devotees embarked on this sacred journey in a convoy of 259 light and heavy vehicles from the Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp. This year's pilgrimage, which commences formally on July 3 and concludes on August 28, is set to offer a profoundly spiritual experience amidst robust security arrangements.
Extensive security measures have been put in place along the yatra routes, including armoured vehicles and aerial surveillance, to ensure the safety of all pilgrims. The Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, which claimed 26 lives and impacted pilgrim footfalls last year, has led to a heightened focus on security this year. The J&K administration, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, J&K Police, the Indian Army, and other security forces have collaborated extensively to guarantee a safe and smooth pilgrimage.
Lt Governor Sinha, who also performed the 'Pratham Puja' to ceremonially mark the yatra's start, extended his best wishes to the pilgrims. He stated, “The yatra is a sacred path where devotion meets spiritual awakening. I wish all devotees a safe, comfortable, blissful and spiritually fulfilling journey. May this holy pilgrimage bring immense joy and divine peace to all.” Pilgrims have already started arriving at the twin base camps of Nunwan in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam and Sonmarg’s Baltal, preparing for the trek to the ice stalagmite lingam situated at an altitude of 3,880 metres.
J&K Transport, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Satish Sharma welcomed the pilgrims at the Baltal Base Camp, reiterating the government's commitment. He assured that the J&K government is fully dedicated to providing safe, efficient, and hassle-free services throughout the yatra. All departments and field functionaries have been instructed to maintain the highest level of alertness, coordination, and responsiveness to promptly address any issues that may arise. Additionally, 'Langar' (community kitchens) are providing free food to pilgrims at base camps like Baltal, ensuring their comfort and sustenance during this significant spiritual endeavor.
