Australia Steps Up as India’s Energy Partner Amid Hormuz Strait Crisis
As West Asia tensions threaten fuel supplies, India turns to Australia for a safer, crisis-free energy route. Here is how this shift impacts India's energy security.
Amid the growing global energy shortage triggered by tensions in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz, Australia is stepping up as a key partner to bridge India’s energy gap. Australian High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, recently shared that enhanced Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplies from Australia are becoming a highly viable alternative for the nation.
Unlike the traditional routes from the Middle East that often face strategic choke points, the maritime path between Australia’s gas fields and India’s east coast remains crisis-free. This proximity makes Australian LNG particularly well-suited to support the growing industrial needs of eastern India, including the transition toward green steel production.
Currently, a significant portion of India’s LNG and crude oil arrives through ports on the west coast, sourced from Middle Eastern countries. However, with shipping activity slowing down due to regional conflicts, the Indian government is also finalizing plans to secure tankers moving through the Hormuz waterway to ensure vital crude oil reaches its destination.
The trade relationship between the two nations is already on a fast track. Indian exports to Australia have surged by 200% over the last five years, far outpacing growth with the rest of the world. Beyond gas, Australia is eyeing the export of critical minerals like lithium and copper to support India’s shift toward clean energy.
This strategic shift ensures that even if one part of the world faces instability, India’s supply chains for metallurgical coal and petroleum products remain intact. As the partnership strengthens, the Indian Ocean is set to become a vital corridor for a more secure and sustainable energy future.
