Second Doctor Sentenced to Home Detention in Matthew Perry Ketamine Case

In a new development in the Matthew Perry ketamine case, Dr. Mark Chavez has been sentenced to eight months of home detention after pleading guilty to obtaining ketamine through fraudulent prescriptions and conspiring to sell it to Perry’s circle. Prosecutors described a scheme that sought to exploit the actor’s addiction for financial gain.

Court filings reveal Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, worked with Chavez and another dealer to supply more than $50,000 worth of ketamine in the weeks before Perry’s death. Chavez admitted he sourced ketamine from his former clinic and a wholesale distributor via fraudulent prescriptions, including a forged prescription for 30 lozenges under a former patient’s name, created without her knowledge or consent, to sell to Plasencia for Perry. One text exchange captured in filings includes the line, “I wonder how much this moron will pay.”

According to the plea agreement, Chavez sold 22 vials of liquid ketamine and nine lozenges to Plasencia, who then provided the drug to Perry. The arrangement was part of a broader scheme to profit from Perry’s addiction, with discussions that prosecutors described as exploiting the actor’s vulnerability for financial gain. Chavez faced up to 10 years in federal prison but received the eight-month home detention sentence. As part of the October 2024 plea deal, he surrendered his medical license and passport.

The case, centered in Los Angeles, has drawn attention to the vulnerabilities that can accompany addiction and the dangers of fraudulent prescriptions. While Chavez’s sentence marks a notable step in accountability, authorities indicate the investigation into others involved in the network continues, underscoring the complexity of the broader case surrounding Perry’s death.
