Irish sensation Kate O'Connor has clinched the gold medal in the heptathlon at the European Championships in Birmingham, delivering a performance that not only secured her a national record but also a deeply emotional victory. The Newry-born 25-year-old entered the final event, the 800m, with a strong 51-point lead over her closest rival, Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands.
O'Connor needed to maintain a gap of less than 3.4 seconds behind Oosterwegel to seal the overall victory. The Dutch athlete ultimately won the 800m in 2:10.87, but O'Connor's determined run, clocking 2:11.74 to finish third behind Italy's Sveva Gerevini, was more than enough.
This outstanding effort saw O'Connor accumulate a total of 6,751 points, setting a new national record.
Oosterwegel claimed silver with 6,713 points, while her Dutch compatriot Sofie Dokter earned the bronze with 6,664 points. This latest triumph builds on an already impressive year for O'Connor, who previously secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland in July and a silver at last year's World Championships.
Reflecting on her journey, O'Connor told RTE Sport, "A couple of years ago, I probably wouldn't have thought this would happen to me. It's been a long two years... there is an increase in pressure with every competition, so each has been different to try and navigate that and this competition has been no different.
It's been difficult from start to finish and I didn't have it easy for a second.
The victory carried a poignant significance, as O'Connor dedicated her gold medal to her late grandmother.
This year has been really tough from outside - my granny died earlier this year," she shared, also acknowledging her father's unwavering support.
"This is my dream, but it's his dream too and I have to dedicate this medal to my granny because she was both of our biggest fans and would have been jumping for joy if she was here."
