Tamil Nadu bus crash near Karaikudi leaves 11 dead, 20+ injured
Two government buses collide head-on near Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, killing 11 and injuring more than 20 as rescue teams rush to the scene.
A devastating head-on collision between two government-operated buses occurred near Vivekananda Polytechnic College in the Nachiyarpuram police limits of Sivaganga district, close to Karaikudi. Police said at least 11 people were killed and more than 20 injured in the crash.
The accident happened around 5:00 PM on Sunday as the TN 39 N 0198 bus, travelling from Kangeyam toward Karaikudi, collided with the TN 63 N 1776 bus on the Karaikudi–Dindigul route near Vivekananda Polytechnic College.
Rescue teams pulled passengers from the mangled interiors and rushed the injured to Karaikudi Government Hospital and other facilities in Sivaganga and nearby areas. Hospitals including Karaikudi Government Hospital, Tirupattur Government Hospital, and Sivaganga Government Hospitals were treating the injured, with several described as seriously injured.
Authorities said the exact cause is not clear and the probe is underway. This crash comes a week after another major head-on collision in Tamil Nadu, in Tenkasi district, which killed several and injured many.
Officials urged calm as the rescue operation continued into the evening and asked the public to cooperate with investigators.
