India Reaffirms Support for Sri Lanka's Prosperity & Progress
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met with Sri Lanka's JVP delegation, assuring India's unwavering support for the island nation's development and fostering deeper bilateral ties.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a productive meeting with Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva and his delegation from Sri Lanka on Thursday, October 1, 2026. This significant engagement underscores the deepening bonds of friendship between the two nations.
The Sri Lankan delegation, comprising five members of the ruling JVP, was on a five-day visit to India, from September 27 to October 1, 2026. This visit is part of a broader initiative to foster BJP-JVP engagement and facilitate the exchange of organizational experiences, ultimately aiming to strengthen ties between the two political parties.
Following their discussion, Mr. Jaishankar took to social media, expressing his pleasure in meeting Mr. Silva and his delegation.
He reiterated India's commitment, stating, "As a trusted partner, India will always support Sri Lanka's progress and prosperity." This statement highlights India's consistent foreign policy stance towards its island neighbor.
Tilvin Silva's visit marks his second trip to India, signaling a notable shift in the JVP's traditional stance towards India.
After his previous visit in February, Mr. Silva had openly discussed the necessity for his party, which once held strong reservations against India, to change its old perceptions and embrace a more cooperative approach.
This evolving perspective is crucial for regional stability and bilateral development.
In a related development, Sri Lanka is actively exploring the India-backed Trincomalee project, a key initiative that could play a vital role in addressing the nation’s ongoing energy crisis.
Such collaborations are indicative of the tangible benefits of stronger bilateral relations.
The JVP delegation included several key figures: central committee member Chandrika Adikari, Member of Parliament Aboobucker Athambawa, district committee member Kabilan Suntharamoorthy, and member of the international department Kalpana Madhubhashini. Vijay Chauthaiwale, in-charge of the BJP’s foreign affairs department, emphasized that the visit's core objective is to bolster engagement and deepen connections between the political parties, paving the way for enhanced governmental cooperation in the future.
