A 35-year-old man from Rohini Sector 23 allegedly orchestrated his own kidnapping to conceal a year of joblessness and overwhelming debt from his unsuspecting family.
Police revealed that the man had been unemployed for nearly a year but maintained a facade, leaving his home daily as if heading to work. During this challenging period, he accumulated significant debt by taking out multiple loans from various finance companies, which he was subsequently unable to repay, leading to immense financial stress.
The elaborate deception unfolded on August 3. The man reportedly left his home around 3:30 p.m. Later that evening, at approximately 8:05 p.m., he called his father, indicating he would return shortly. Moments later, he informed his family that his car had apparently brushed against an elderly couple near Sector 28, and he was dropping them off at their destination.
The situation took a dramatic turn when his younger brother received a call where only the urgent words “Deepu, Deepu, ruko” (Deepu, Deepu, stop) were heard before the line abruptly went dead. His phone then became unreachable, sparking immediate concern among his family members, who suspected an abduction.
A frantic search ensued, leading the family to discover his car abandoned on the road leading from Sector 28 towards Khera. A formal case of kidnapping was promptly registered at the Shahbad Dairy police station, initiating a full investigation.
Through diligent investigation, the police successfully traced the man near the Kaushambi Metro Station bus stand. Upon questioning, he confessed to the elaborate hoax, admitting he had been jobless for the past year and had been misleading his family. He also acknowledged the multiple loans and the immense pressure stemming from his inability to meet his EMI obligations.
Unable to cope with the immense financial stress and dreading the inevitable confrontation with his family, he voluntarily left his home and had been staying at various undisclosed locations to avoid being found.
