US-Israel airstrikes fail to crush Iran command as casualties rise
Airstrikes on Tehran beat back attempts to destroy Iran's military command, while Iran reports heavy casualties and analysts watch shifting missile and drone dynamics.
Tehran was the focus of a sweeping air campaign after around 50 Israeli jets struck an underground Iranian military complex. Officials described the operation as an attempt to cripple Iran’s command and control, but early assessments indicate the strike did not destroy Tehran’s military leadership. The target was an underground bunker believed to house key command functions, yet the system appears to remain intact and capable of coordinating a broader defensive posture.
Across Iran, the war’s human cost continues to climb. Iranian state media outlets say at least 1,332 people have been killed since the conflict began, underscoring the war’s toll on civilians as aerial campaigns intensify and regional tensions spike.
Geopolitics are also shifting as Russia is reported to be backing Iran by sharing military intelligence, expanding Tehran’s strategic reach and complicating international responses. Meanwhile, reports from the battlefield note that six US troops were killed and 18 wounded after an Iranian drone strike on Sunday, illustrating the war’s deadly brinkmanship and the risk to soldiers on all sides.
Analysts have suggested that many of Iran’s ballistic missile launch facilities may have been damaged in prior strikes, and some assessments place Iran’s missile inventory at under 1,000 missiles. Drone activity, observers say, appears to be tapering in some theaters, even as Iran continues to adapt its tactics and defenses. The competing campaigns are drawing in more global powers and raising questions about the war’s next phase.
With the conflict showing no clear daylight, experts warn about escalation risks and the difficulty of neutralizing underground targets through air power alone. Tehran’s leadership has framed the response as defensive, while foreign capitals debate deterrence, diplomacy, and the path toward de-escalation as the region braces for what comes next.
