Day 2 of the Kerala School Kalolsavam showcased crowd-pleasing oppana, folk and tribal dances at Thekkinkadu Maidan, along with dramatic HS performances and standout young talents.
Day two of the Kerala School Kalolsavam lit up Thekkinkadu Maidan as thousands packed the stands for a lineup that highlighted drama, oppana, tribal dances and folk performances. The mood was electric as young performers took the stage, while the nearby Chaldean Syrian HSS Ground hosted dramatic acts that kept audiences on the edge of their seats.
S. Varada, dressed in a blue brocade blouse and kasavu mundu, said the moment meant a lot as she performed on the festival's main floor for the first time. "I was nervous seeing thousands of spectators," she said after earning an A grade for her portrayal of a kind Thamburatti in Folk Dance (HSS Girls). "The other girls danced really well, and I hope to be back next year."
Meanwhile, the boys staged Bharatanatyam on the main stage and the girls of Thiruvathirkali (HSS) captivated the audience. Oppana, one of the festival's biggest crowd-pullers, drew large cheers and added to the festive energy. The day also saw the percussive chenda melam and a fresh entrant, Mangalamkali, a tribal dance that surprised the crowd with its energy.
Drama, always a festival favorite, drew full houses in the HS category, with stories of conflict, compassion and conscience on stage, reflecting a vibrant theatre scene that transcends classrooms. The High School drama competition moved audiences, with productions that blended tradition and contemporary themes.
The festival's second day underscored how tradition and youth collaboration are shaping Kerala's school arts scene, offering a glimpse of what could become national-level talent. While Varada spoke about her last chances next year, the overall mood suggested many of these students are building foundations for future stages beyond school walls.
As the festival continues, audiences can expect more dazzling dance sequences, dramatic arcs and cultural showcases that celebrate the state's rich arts heritage.
