Rekha's family has contested the stability of the relationship, claiming Sumit had harassed Rekha in the past and that a complaint was filed and later resolved after he apologised. They say the tension grew as Rekha's family moved to arrange a marriage with someone from a different caste, straining the couple further.

Police say Rekha lived in Salarpur, Noida, and worked at a private company in Sector 62, while Sumit resided in Trilokpuri, Delhi, and ran a mineral water plant business. The authorities are reviewing calls, messages, and family statements to establish a fuller timeline and motive as they continue the investigation.
