J&K L-G Sinha: Sufi Ideals Mirror Ancient Indian Wisdom, Amarnath Yatra Gains Support

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently highlighted the profound connection between Islamic Sufi traditions and ancient Indian scriptures, emphasizing a shared heritage of co-existence and spirituality. Speaking at an 'Interfaith Dialogue' in Srinagar, Mr. Sinha stated that Sufi saints and scholars, who arrived in India during the 12th and 13th centuries, were deeply inspired by the vision embedded in the Vedas, Upanishads, Buddhism, and Jainism. He noted that these revered figures found a unique Indian culture rooted in love, spirituality, compassion, and equality.

The L-G also pointed out that numerous repositories of Sanskrit knowledge were historically translated into Arabic, underscoring the ancient intellectual exchange. He invoked the timeless prayer, 'Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinaḥ, Sarve Santu Niramayaḥ' – "may all be happy, may all be free from illness" – asserting that this universal prayer, not limited to any single religion, truly embodies India's identity. Mr. Sinha reiterated that Hinduism, or Sanatana Dharma, has historically embraced diversity, allowing various faiths like Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism to flourish, establishing India's legacy as a civilization rooted in mutual respect.

In a world often fractured by conflict and intolerance, Mr. Sinha believes that the core spirit of Sanatana Dharma and Indian philosophy can serve as a guiding light. He stressed that while the world may be divided by religion, language, and race, Indian thought possesses the unique power to bridge these divides, embodying the idea that humanity should live together as one family.

Adding to this spirit of unity, the Lieutenant Governor also met with various civil society groups, business leaders, and religious heads in Srinagar. A primary topic of discussion was the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. During these discussions, Kashmiri Muslim leaders and civil groups extended their full support for the annual pilgrimage. Mr. Sinha lauded these participants, referring to them as "custodians of spiritual tradition," a testament to their commitment to fostering harmony and ensuring the smooth conduct of the sacred journey. This widespread support underscores a collective dedication to peace and inter-community cooperation in the region.
