Irish Players Skip Handshakes, Bow Heads Amid Israel-Gaza Tensions
Republic of Ireland players made a powerful statement before their UEFA Nations League match against Israel, refusing handshakes and bowing during the anthem. Discover why their actions sparked worldwide awareness.
The Republic of Ireland men's football team made a striking statement of protest before their UEFA Nations League match against Israel in Hungary, choosing not to engage in traditional pre-match formalities. Players did not shake hands with their Israeli counterparts and bowed their heads during Israel's national anthem, actions head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said "raised awareness worldwide." The match, which Ireland won 3-0, was held at a neutral venue in Hungary, a decision stemming from controversy since the two teams were drawn together in Group B3 in February.
The fixture has faced calls for boycott from groups like "Irish Sport for Palestine" due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. Hallgrimsson praised his team's unified stance, stating,
I hope that will not be in the next game because they have shown support to the protest, they have raised awareness worldwide, not only in Ireland, on the subject and that is normally the reason for protesting, to raise awareness of a situation.
He emphasized that the players had acted with conviction, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who withdrew from the squad for both fixtures against Israel, citing it would be "wrong to participate." During the game, Irish players wore black armbands, a gesture confirmed by Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief executive David Courell as being "in recognition of all lives lost in the [Gaza] conflict." Jack Moylan, after scoring Ireland's third goal, notably removed and kissed his armband before kissing his team's badge.
The decision to play the match came after a lengthy team meeting on Saturday, where players voted by a "significant majority" to fulfill the fixture. Despite the FAI confirming no tickets would be sold to Republic of Ireland supporters, a small number of fans were present.
The Irish players were reportedly jeered by some Israel fans during their warm-up.
Hallgrimsson clarified that player opinions did not influence team selection for the match, focusing purely on performance. #IrelandFootball #IsraelGazaConflict #UEFANationsLeague #StandForPeace
