A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in Kolkata's Taratala area, where an under-construction warehouse shed collapsed, claiming the lives of three individuals and trapping numerous others. The devastating event has triggered a massive rescue operation involving multiple agencies, as authorities work tirelessly to save those still caught under the debris.
According to reports, three people have died following the collapse, while 21 persons have been pulled out of the structure. Of those rescued, 18 are reported to be injured. Approximately 18 workers are still believed to be trapped inside, with rescue personnel having established contact with them, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari promptly arrived at the accident site with several cabinet ministers to oversee the rescue efforts. Addressing the media, Mr. Adhikari stated, “All the agencies are working together. We have rescued 21 persons of which three have died.” He also expressed his profound sorrow on X, saying, “Deeply pained and saddened by the tragic loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction warehouse building near Brace Bridge in Taratala… Words fail to express my sorrow for the precious lives lost in this tragedy. My deepest condolences go out to their bereaved families. The State Government stands firmly with them in this hour of unimaginable grief and we will extend all possible support to them.”
Local residents at the accident site indicated that between 50 to 60 workers were present when the collapse occurred. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Kolkata Police, doctors, and disaster management units, are on the scene, employing heavy equipment to cut through iron beams and clear the rubble. Their urgent priority is to extricate the trapped workers as quickly and safely as possible.
The Disaster Management Department of the West Bengal government has established a control room for public inquiries and assistance.
