AOC Slams Trump Over ICE Shootings & Reversal on Traffic Stops
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez condemns Trump's directive to resume ICE traffic stops after two fatal shootings by agents, reigniting fierce debate over immigration enforcement.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of campaigning on "cruelty and violence against immigrants" following his directive for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to resume traffic stops. This policy reversal comes just days after ICE agents fatally shot two immigrants, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, the latter occurring in front of his three-year-old daughter.
Trump announced on Truth Social Wednesday morning that ICE would not end traffic stops, despite earlier plans to do so. This decision followed pushback from many "MAGA figures." Trump emphasized that mass deportations remain a priority, stating, "In order to do this, we must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands."
Ocasio-Cortez drew a stark parallel to Trump's infamous 2016 remark about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue and retaining support. "This is the guy that said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, and people would still support him," Ocasio-Cortez told The Independent. "And now he has an agency shooting people out in the street. And at this point, it's practically a campaign promise from this guy." She implied that the chaos surrounding ICE operations was an expected outcome, given Trump's explicit campaign focus on mass deportations.
The recent killings are not isolated incidents. They follow a contentious fight earlier this year over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Democrats had opposed funding DHS after an ICE official killed Renee Good and Customs and Border Protection officials shot and killed another protester, Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis. Following the firing of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in March, her replacement Markwayne Mullin had aimed to make the department less controversial than under his predecessor, a goal seemingly complicated by these latest developments. The renewed emphasis on aggressive enforcement, as championed by Trump, signals a continuation of the highly scrutinized tactics that have drawn widespread criticism from human rights advocates and progressive lawmakers alike.
