Delhi Heatwave Relief: Rain and Storms to Bring Much-Needed Cool Down

It has been a scorching week for the national capital, but relief is finally on the horizon. Residents of Delhi have been enduring a blistering heatwave, with temperatures recently soaring to a high of 44.3 degrees Celsius. However, the India Meteorological Department has some refreshing news: rain and storms are expected to sweep through the city, offering a much-needed break from the sun's intense grip.

Starting today, light to very light rain is likely to grace parts of Delhi during the afternoon and evening hours. While the maximum temperature might still hover around the 42 to 44-degree mark initially, the atmosphere is set to change. Be prepared for strong winds and squalls, with speeds reaching between 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. Dust storms and even potential hail are also on the radar for several parts of North and central India as a fresh Western Disturbance moves into the region.

The real cooling trend is expected to take hold over the coming weekend. From Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, 2026, more consistent rainfall is predicted across the capital. This shift is expected to bring the maximum temperatures down drastically to a much more manageable 35 to 37 degrees Celsius. This is a significant drop compared to the recent highs at the Safdarjung observatory, which were nearly four degrees above the seasonal normal.
