Gaganyaan to Begin Journey in December with Vyommitra on Board
According to news reports, in December 2025, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will launch the Gaganyaan program's first uncrewed mission. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan affirmed that Vyommitra, a half-humanoid robot intended to mimic human functions within the spacecraft, will be carried on the G1 mission. In advance of India's first human space mission, this test flight will assess systems.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently took part in the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station, said his experience will provide valuable inputs for Gaganyaan and future projects like the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, according to Isro Chief V. Narayanan at a press briefing. Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, another astronaut, also discussed the mission and credited ISRO's extensive teamwork as being essential to the program's success.
Narayanan pointed out that ISRO has experienced a number of changes recently. In addition to monitoring the NISAR satellite, which was launched in July 2025 in collaboration with NASA, the agency has been testing cryogenic engine technology and publishing data from the Aditya L1 Sun mission. The GSLV launcher launched NISAR, dubbed the most expensive Earth observation satellite to date, into orbit and finished unfurling its antenna.
Currently, ISRO's satellite systems facilitate real-time tracking, television broadcasting, telemedicine, and tele-education. These services connect about 21,000 shipping vessels and 8,600 trains. Along with actively participating in disaster warning initiatives, the agency's programs support 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN. A 6,500 kg communication satellite for the US will soon be launched by India's space agency, which has already launched 433 satellites from 34 nations.
The first uncrewed flight in India's human spaceflight program will be the G1 mission in December. Before astronauts are launched into orbit in later stages of Gaganyaan, the test with Vyommitra is meant to verify operational and safety systems.
