India's Car Market Shifts: Alternative Fuels Hit Record 40% Sales in June! 🚗💨
Big news from India's auto sector! CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles now make up over 40% of car sales. Discover why buyers are choosing fuel-efficient options and what this means for the future of mobility! #EVs #CNG #
Indian car buyers are rapidly moving away from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. For the first time ever in June, compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid, and electric models collectively accounted for over 40% of passenger vehicle retail sales, signaling a significant shift in consumer preference towards lower running costs and fuel-efficient technologies.
Alternative-fuel passenger vehicles achieved a record 40.2% share of retail sales in June. This marks a sharp increase from 33.3% just a year prior and 38.02% in May. Among these options, CNG continued to be the dominant contributor, securing a 24.3% market share. Hybrids followed with 8.3%, and electric vehicles (EVs) captured 7.8% of the market. Consequently, the combined share of petrol and diesel vehicles dipped below 60% for the first time.
This milestone occurred during a record-breaking month for the passenger vehicle market overall. Retail sales surged by 28.6% year-on-year, reaching 410,853 units, the highest ever recorded for the month of June. Rural markets demonstrated impressive growth, outperforming urban centers with a 35.1% increase in sales compared to 24.7% in cities. However, rural demand saw a slight moderation sequentially, as the delayed and uneven southwest monsoon led some buyers to adopt a wait-and-watch approach.
The growing preference for alternative fuels is attributed to several factors. These include improving supplies, which stabilized after the West Asia ceasefire eased logistics and crude oil prices. Additionally, a healthy pipeline of bookings, the launch of fresh new models, and sustained consumer interest in fuel-efficient powertrains have all contributed to this trend. Passenger EV retail volumes, in particular, climbed to an all-time high of 31,823 units during the month, while robust demand for CNG models further accelerated the transition away from conventional fuels.
Despite a 2-3% price increase introduced by auto companies from June 1, bookings remained largely unaffected, indicating resilient underlying demand. Dealers have also reported a normalization of supplies, further supporting the market's strong performance.
