OpenAI secures a $110B funding round led by Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, fueling compute capacity, AI chips, and a major AWS expansion.
OpenAI is closing one of the largest private funding rounds in history, pulling in about $110 billion from Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank. The fresh capital will help secure the advanced AI chips and the computing capacity it needs to stay ahead as rivals press for pace.
Alongside the cash, Amazon is set to provide 2 gigawatts of computing capacity powered by its Trainium chips, and the two companies are expanding their cloud relationship with an additional $100 billion in OpenAI spending on AWS over the next eight years. Amazon will also work with OpenAI to build customized models for its engineering teams, and AWS will be the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, the enterprise platform for running AI agents.
OpenAI’s first-party products will continue to be hosted on Microsoft Azure, with Microsoft retaining exclusive licenses and access to IP across OpenAI models and products.
NVIDIA’s investment deepens the intertwined ties among two of the industry’s biggest players, highlighting a broader trend of hardware, cloud, and AI developers forming long-term partnerships.
The funding round underscores OpenAI’s ambition to scale its compute capacity and keep a leadership position in AI development as the field evolves.
