China’s trade surplus tops $1 trillion on non-US growth — exports rebound
China posts a November trade surplus above $1 trillion as exports rise 5.9% and demand grows in Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia, despite a drop to the US.
China's trade surplus topped $1 trillion for the first time in November as manufacturers redirected more shipments to non-US markets. Overall exports rose 5.9% year-on-year, reversing October's contraction of 1.1% and beating a 3.8% forecast. Exports to Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia surged, while shipments to the United States fell about 29% year-on-year in November.
The monthly trade surplus reached $111.68 billion in November, the highest since June, and above expectations of around $100.2 billion. The surplus for the first eleven months of the year pushed past the $1 trillion mark, underscoring a year of resilient trade momentum even as tariff pressures linger on the US front.
The dramatic shift comes as China steps up efforts to diversify export markets, leveraging closer ties with Southeast Asia and the European Union and expanding low-tariff production hubs. Exports to the EU rose by about 14.8%, and shipments to Australia surged roughly 35.8%, with Southeast Asian economies importing 8.2% more goods than a year earlier. Meanwhile, exports to the United States declined, reflecting ongoing tariff frictions despite broader global demand.
The trade data also highlight a broader pattern: tariff cuts under the U.S.-China trade truce did not lift shipments to the U.S. last month, but overall export growth rebounded. We see continued resilience in China’s exports and the likelihood of further gains in global market share next year. Analysts point to ongoing rerouting of trade flows as a key factor offsetting the drag from tariffs while new markets expand the country’s export footprint.
Analysts say the trend reflects a broader shift in global trade patterns as Chinese manufacturers tap closer markets and new hubs that offer lower tariffs and more stable access, signaling a potential longer-term rebalancing of supply chains away from a sole reliance on the United States.
