A contentious debate has erupted between former BJP leader K. Annamalai and the BJP regarding the stringent security measures implemented for the upcoming NEET re-test. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a highly competitive examination for undergraduate medical seats, is scheduled for a re-examination on June 21 after the original May 3 test was canceled due to an alleged paper leak.
K. Annamalai, currently the Tamil Nadu BJP chief, has voiced strong concerns over what he terms the "militarisation" of the re-test. He argues that while measures to prevent paper leaks are welcome, the heightened security for a three-hour exam will only intensify the "already ballooning exam pressure" on students. Annamalai also highlighted that these measures might not resolve the core issue but could instead create new problems, contradicting the National Education Policy 2020's goal to reduce "Exam Stress." He also pointed out difficulties candidates are facing in downloading their admit cards, an essential document for the examination.
In response, Vinoj P Selvam, the state secretary of BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, defended the Centre's approach. Selvam stated that such robust security measures are standard for large-scale examinations, citing China's Gaokao, which is taken by over 13 million students under strict protocols, as an example. He emphasized that these measures are not "militarisation" but rather a necessary step to protect merit and instill confidence in the examination system among students.
The re-examination on June 21 comes after the May 3 test was marred by a significant paper leak, which triggered widespread outrage across the country. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the incident. To ensure the integrity of the re-test, the Centre has announced unprecedented security protocols, including the involvement of the Indian Air Force for transporting question papers. This ongoing discussion underscores the delicate balance between ensuring exam integrity and managing student welfare in high-stakes academic environments.
