DMK Faces Tough Contests in Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam

The DMK is contesting two Assembly segments in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam districts, fielding Nivedha M. Murugan, the district secretary, in the Poombuhar constituency. In the previous election, Murugan secured 96,102 votes and won by a margin of 3,299 votes. He now faces AIADMK challenger S. Pownraj. A section of voters cites limited accessibility, weak ground connect, lack of visible development works, and poor road infrastructure as ongoing concerns. An undercurrent of internal factionalism within the DMK is also seen as a constraint, even as party insiders insist the discontent is largely candidate-specific and has not dampened overall support. Senior leaders, including Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin, have actively campaigned in the region. In a notable shift over the past three days, Murugan has broadened his campaign by bringing in a wider pool of district-level functionaries and prominent party faces, moving beyond his earlier reliance on local cadres. Daily outreach efforts, village-level meetings, and interactions with community leaders have been stepped up. Party wings such as the farmers’ and women’s wings are also active on the ground. While there was resistance in a few villages initially, cadres say they have managed to regain access. Discontent persists among sections of the fishing community, and minority voters in areas such as Kuthalam are expected to back the DMK despite local grievances. The contest in Nagapattinam district is part of the DMK’s broader strategy in the coastal belt, where outreach and development narratives are under close voter scrutiny as campaigning continues toward the polls.
