A tense interrogation in Ahmedabad escalated dramatically on Wednesday when a notorious history-sheeter, identified as Kaleem, allegedly attacked senior police officers, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal, with a knife. The incident led to the officer firing his service weapon in self-defense, wounding the accused in the leg.
The Crime Branch had apprehended Kaleem, a resident of Ahmedabad's Isanpur area, based on intelligence suggesting he possessed illegal weapons. Police reportedly recovered four weapons from him. During questioning, Kaleem is said to have turned violent, pulling out a concealed knife and assaulting the officers, causing a "sharp-force injury" to the JCP.
In the ensuing scuffle, JCP Sharad Singhal discharged his weapon, hitting Kaleem in the leg and neutralizing the immediate threat. Both the injured officer and the accused were subsequently taken for medical treatment.
Authorities revealed that Kaleem has an extensive criminal record, with more than 30 serious offenses registered against his name. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officials during their duties. A thorough investigation into the matter is currently underway.
