Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued a stern warning and a one-month ultimatum to all coaching institutes in Delhi: complete mandatory fire audits, install essential safety equipment, and strictly adhere to all prescribed safety measures. Failure to comply within this period will lead to severe action, including the sealing of the non-compliant institutes.
Emphasizing that the safety and security of students are non-negotiable, Ms. Gupta stated, "One month. That is the deadline. The number of coaching institutes in Delhi is not the issue; the safety and security of our children is." She made it clear that any institute found without a fire audit, mandatory safety equipment, or proper safety measures after the deadline will face strict repercussions.
The Chief Minister also called upon students to play an active role in ensuring their safety. She urged them to report any unsafe coaching centers through messages, e-mail, or phone, assuring that "Every complaint will be acted upon. There will be no compromise on the safety of our children."
This significant directive follows closely on the heels of tragic incidents in other parts of the country and within Delhi itself. Just days ago, 15 people, mostly students, lost their lives in a devastating fire at a commercial building in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Earlier last month, five students were killed when a commercial building near the Saket Metro Station in Delhi collapsed.
With approximately 923 coaching centers operating in Delhi, the scale of the task is considerable. To streamline the process, Education Minister Ashish Sood previously announced that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been designated as the nodal agency responsible for conducting fire audits and safety inspections across all coaching centers in the capital. This proactive measure aims to prevent future tragedies and safeguard the lives of countless students.
