Four senior underground Maoist leaders surrender in Telangana, signaling a collapse of the CPI(Maoist) apex structure and a shift toward reintegration into mainstream politics.
In Hyderabad on Tuesday, four of the CPI(Maoist)'s most senior underground leaders surrendered before Telangana police, signaling a major shift in the clandestine group's strength. The move was described by the Telangana DGP as a decisive setback to the Maoist outfit and a watershed moment in the state's security landscape.
The surrenderees are Tippiri Thirupati alias Devuji, a long-time Central Committee Member and Politburo Member who had been underground for 44 years; Malla Raji Reddy alias Sangram, active for 46 years; Bade Chokka Rao alias Damodar alias Jagan, in the movement for 28 years; and Nune Narsimha Reddy alias Ganganna alias Sannu Dada, who had been with the movement for 36 years. Devuji had served as commander in the Dandakaranya squads and later held key roles, including in-charge of the Central Military Commission and spokesperson under the pseudonym Abhay.
Telangana DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy said reintegration of these senior cadres into mainstream life effectively collapses the party’s apex organisational structure, with the central committee now reduced to a single active member. The surrender of the Secretary of the Telangana State Committee along with a State Committee member has left the state committee defunct, underscoring a broader weakening of the outfit in the region.
Security officials say such surrenders reflect a broader trend toward disengagement from armed struggle and a cautious shift toward reintegration, potentially encouraging remaining cadres to follow suit. The development marks a significant turn in the fight against Maoist influence in the region and raises questions about the future trajectory of Maoist activity across the state.
