Mundhe Exposes: Hospital Profiteering & Mondegar's Food Safety Woes

Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has raised significant concerns regarding hospital pricing, medical device markups, and regulatory shortcomings across the state. In an exclusive conversation, Mundhe highlighted a glaring discrepancy between procurement costs and the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of essential medical items.

A recent Maharashtra FDA survey uncovered astonishing gaps, such as an IV infusion set procured by hospitals for approximately ₹11 but sold to patients at an MRP of ₹325. This vast difference underscores a systemic issue of profiteering within the healthcare sector, directly impacting patient costs. Mundhe emphasized the critical need for increased transparency in hospital billing and tighter regulation of trade margins on medical devices.

Establishments are now under pressure to address these regulatory shortcomings to ensure fair pricing and consumer protection.

Beyond hospital finances, the FDA Commissioner also addressed compliance issues linked to iconic establishments. Mumbai's beloved Café Mondegar, a landmark since 1932, recently had its food business license suspended by the Maharashtra FDA.

This decisive action followed an inspection that flagged multiple food safety and hygiene lapses, including temperature-control violations, improper defrosting, inadequate rapid cooling, and general sanitation concerns in the kitchen.

The crackdown on Café Mondegar is part of a broader food-safety enforcement drive by the Maharashtra FDA, particularly intensified ahead of the Ganeshotsav festival. As part of this initiative, the FDA has already seized over 4,138 kilograms of dairy and sweet products worth more than ₹15.5 lakh across the state.

Furthermore, workshops have been conducted in Mumbai, training around 320 members of Ganesh mandals on safe food preparation practices.

Commissioner Mundhe's firm stance underscores the FDA's commitment to consumer welfare, whether it's ensuring fair pricing for medical services and devices or guaranteeing the safety and hygiene of food consumed by the public. Businesses, from hospitals to iconic eateries, are being called upon to rectify violations and meet regulatory standards to maintain their licenses and public trust.
