Yuvraj Mehta, 27, a software engineer who worked in Gurugram, was heading home to Noida Sector 150 when his car veered into a deep, water-filled pit adjacent to an under-construction building late on January 16. He died after frantically pleading for help for around two hours, with his body recovered on January 17 following an extensive search operation involving fire services and other agencies. The post-mortem report indicated water in the lungs and cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
The pit, fed by rainwater and connected drains, sits just off a well-developed road and features an almost 90-degree turn, with no barricades or warning signage. Locals had flagged the hazard long before the crash, noting that the uncovered hole posed a serious danger to motorists, especially at night and in low visibility.
Earlier, a truck had crashed at the same spot on January 2 amid dense fog; the driver survived after being trapped for nearly four hours. A local driver, Gurvinder Singh, injured in that incident, provided firsthand accounts of the perils at the site. Some residents have alleged negligence by authorities for not installing barricades or warning signs, while police say rescue teams, including a crane, ladder, makeshift boat, and searchlights, did their utmost as fog hampered visibility.
Police officials publicly rejected allegations of negligence in the case, stressing that every effort was made to reach the victim and that the situation was hindered by near-zero visibility due to fog. Some witnesses have claimed there was an attempt to conceal details, sparking calls for a thorough investigation. The incident underscores the need for better safety measures around open pits near construction zones, particularly at night and in foggy conditions.
Mehta, a resident of Noida who worked in Gurugram, was returning to Sector 150 when the tragedy occurred. His death has prompted renewed scrutiny of road safety practices near active construction sites and the precautions in place to prevent such hazards in busy urban corridors.
