A former healthcare worker has received a caution from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for attempting to obtain and sell the medical records of Catherine, Princess of Wales. This incident unfolded after the Princess underwent abdominal surgery earlier this year.
The ICO launched a criminal investigation in March 2024 following a report that a staff member at the London Clinic, where the Princess was a patient, tried to access her sensitive medical notes. The London Clinic, a prominent independent private hospital in the UK frequently used by royals, confirmed its cooperation with the ICO, stating: "We are pleased our work with the ICO has brought this sad and isolated incident to a conclusion. There were no regulatory breaches by the hospital."
According to the privacy and data protection watchdog, the caution was deemed "the appropriate and proportionate enforcement response." The ICO highlighted "deliberate misuse of highly sensitive personal information and an offer to disclose it for financial gain." Their investigation, however, found no evidence of "wider organisational issues arising from the healthcare provision in this matter," suggesting it was an isolated incident.
Ian Hulme, the ICO's executive director for regulatory supervision, emphasized the importance of trust in healthcare settings. "People should be able to trust that the personal information they're giving to healthcare settings is safe and protected from exploitation," he stated. "When this trust is broken, it's right that the law allows us to take action."
Princess Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024, leading her to step back from public duties. Two months later, she publicly disclosed that she was receiving treatment for cancer. She recently confirmed being in remission and has gradually resumed public engagements.
