Brace Yourself: Uttar Pradesh Electricity Bills to Spike by 10% This June

Residents across Uttar Pradesh are in for a shock this month as electricity bills are set to rise by 10 percent. The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has officially introduced a fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS) for the June billing cycle, adding more weight to the wallets of consumers already battling a scorching summer.

The decision stems from the high costs incurred by the state to purchase power back in March 2026. While the calculated surcharge actually worked out to a staggering 20.61 percent, current regulations by the state's Electricity Regulatory Commission cap the monthly recovery at 10 percent. This means consumers will see the 10 percent hike now, with the possibility of the remaining balance being adjusted in future bills.

This move is expected to generate approximately Rs 1,610.57 crore for the power corporation. Officials point to the extreme heatwave conditions which have driven electricity consumption to record highs, forcing the purchase of expensive power to meet the demand.

However, the hike has not been met without resistance. Consumer rights advocates have raised concerns, calling the surcharge an unfair burden on the public. Critics argue that the calculations include old dues from the past two years and question why power was bought at higher rates from private producers. There are now calls for an independent investigation into these procurement costs and a demand to halt further recoveries until the process is reviewed.

For now, residents should prepare for a significant jump in their monthly expenses as the new charges take effect immediately in the June cycle.
