Telangana Maoists Now Leaderless, DGP Says as Surrenders Grow
Telangana police say the Maoist movement is headless and weakening, with rising surrenders and a shrinking core, as authorities pledge rehabilitation and lawful processing.
Telangana DGP B Shivdhar Reddy said the Maoist movement in the state is headless, leaderless and rudderless following the surrender of senior leadership. He noted that only 11 members from Telangana remain active among Maoists, with just one in the action group. The structure appears fragmented and weakened, but sustained security operations and increasing surrenders have significantly eroded its organisational strength.
On the position of senior leader Muppala Laxman Rao alias Ganapathi, the DGP said he is not in the forests but in an urban area, and the efforts to track him will continue. Since the formation of Telangana, 5,865 Maoist cadres have surrendered in the State alone. These include members from the top leadership to the lowest-level committees. He added that the number opting for rehabilitation far exceeds those who died in encounters, and the policy has emerged as a major attraction.
The government is implementing all promises to the extent possible. Cadres who genuinely wish to surrender and are eligible for rehabilitation are supported in multiple ways, including allocation of land, financial assistance, and access to education. Regarding pending criminal cases, the DGP said the government would adopt a sympathetic approach in accordance with the law, stressing that the intention is not to harass those who have chosen the path of peace; cases will be dealt with legally and humanely.
Regarding potential causes for Left-Wing Extremism, the DGP noted that while security forces have largely cleared affected areas of violent incidents, long-term stability hinges on governance and development in the region.
Earlier reports also highlighted the surrender of top Maoist leaders, underscoring that the CPI(Maoist) structure has effectively collapsed and the organisation is leaderless and rudderless, nearing tatters.
