Sensex Drops to Pandemic-Era Valuations: Is This a Correction or Reset?
As FIIs pull billions, rupee slides, and global tensions bite, Indian equities wobble. Experts weigh short-term risks against a potential fundamentals-driven reset.
India’s stock benchmarks have slipped into pandemic-era valuation territory, with the Sensex hovering near its lowest price-to-earnings levels since the Covid crash of 2020. The slide has traders wondering whether the move is a routine correction or the start of a deeper reset in sentiment.
Foreign investors have pulled out billions, global tensions persist, the rupee has weakened, and earnings outlooks remain cautious, all combining to keep risk appetite in check. The persistent selling by FIIs, along with crude price pressure and a softer rupee, has kept indices on a downbeat path.
Market data illustrate the scale: In March, investors erased about Rs 51 lakh crore of market wealth, while the combined market capitalization has fallen by about Rs 9.4 lakh crore as overseas flows trend negative. Banks stocks were not spared, with regulatory changes adding to the pressure.
Even as the headline indices sag, pockets of resilience remain. Financials, defence, and premium consumer names have shown relative strength, underscoring that the sell-off is not uniform across sectors.
Analysts caution that the current phase could be either a short-term correction or the onset of a structural adjustment in valuations. With earnings outlooks uncertain and macro headwinds persisting, investors are advised to stay selective, focus on fundamentals, and watch how global cues influence flows in the coming weeks.
