Sundar C Nominated by NDA Ally for Madurai Central
Film producer Sundar C will contest Madurai Central under NDA via ally PNK, as AIADMK bets on the alliance amid DMK criticisms.
Film producer, director and actor Sundar C has been nominated by the Pudiya Neethi Katchi (PNK), an ally of the NDA, to contest from the Madurai Central Assembly constituency. The party said it would seek votes on the AIADMK’s two leaves symbol.
A.C. Shanmugam, founder of the PNK, said AIADMK under Edappadi K. Palaniswami would sweep the Assembly election and comfortably form the next government. He added that, with the DMK facing severe criticism for its “failures across sectors” over the past five years, the AIADMK would restore its lost sheen.
Sundar C, known for his work as a producer, writer and director in Tamil cinema, has been associated with hit films such as Anbe Sivam, the Aranmanai series, and the Kalakalappu series. It may be recalled that his name was recently proposed as the director of a new film starring Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, but he later expressed his inability to take up the project. The PNK, which has been allotted two seats in the NDA, will decide on the second seat on Monday in Chennai, according to Mr. Shanmugam.
AIADMK cadre were disappointed that the seat was allocated to an ally rather than a candidate from their party. “Madurai Central is a prestigious seat… and giving it to the ally is unfortunate,” an AIADMK councillor in the Madurai Corporation said. The cadre base will still work hard for the alliance, however, following the high command’s decision.
The Madurai Central contest adds to a broader AIADMK-NDA strategy as they push to consolidate seats ahead of the DMK’s campaign and the state’s electoral battles. Sundar C’s celebrity profile, coupled with Kushbu—his wife and a noted actor-politician—adds a star dynamic to the race that local voters will be watching closely.
